IT Class - PBL Lesson 1

Dear Children,

In preparation for the IT lesson, I would like you do some research on the problem(s) the world is facing ( E.g Global Warming, depletion of resources). Do place more emophasis on environmental issues. After stating the problem(s) that the world is facing, suggest ways which we can help save the world.

  1. The world is heading for an "ecological credit crunch" far worse than the current financial crisis because humans are over-using the natural resources of the planet. Also The most pressing food crisis in the world at present is in Ethiopia, according to John Holmes, the United Nations' under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs. The Living Planet report calculates that humans are using 30% more
resources than the Earth can replenish each year, which is leading to
deforestation, degraded soils, polluted air and water, and dramatic
declines in numbers of fish and other species. As a result, we are
running up an ecological debt of $4tr (£2.5tr) to $4.5tr every year.i got this info from the net

  2. THE WORLD is having many problems. One of them is pollution.pollutions may cause death or sickness to living things.some pollutions are poisonous and some types of pollution are air and water poillution.
T0 prevent that from happening, we all need to stop trowing litter on the ground or water.

  3. The world's biggest problems will be these.

Economic Collapse : Fragilities in the current global economy could tip the developed world into conditions not seen since the 1920s.

Peak Oil : Petroleum has powered the modern world for almost 100 years; today, many industry insiders say the we may be reaching a permanent peak in oil production.

Global Water Crisis : Over the last 50 years the human population has nearly tripled, while industrial pollution, unsustainable agriculture, and poor civic planning have decreased the overall water supply.

Species Extinction : Certain species that human beings depend upon for our food supply are going extinct; if their numbers fall too low we may face extinction ourselves.

Rapid Climate Change : While the debate rages on about the causes of climate change, global warming is an empirical fact. The problem is both a curse and blessing, in that people from different cultures will either have to work together or face mutual destruction.

We can do things to prevent these from happen by:
    1. Keep the enviornment clean by not throwing any litter on the ground and if you see one, try to pick it up and throw it to a nearest dustbin.
2.Don't waste any oil, water and money. Oil and water are getting lesser and lesser by the moment and water is H2O and most of the contries is now experiencing droughts. Money is hard earned these days and your parents must to work very hard each month to get about $500-$4000. If the total spending each month (e.g. the electricity and the water bill) is more that half of your parent's salary, try not to waste money on those things you don't need.
3.The animals are extincting and you can prevent it by: if you see the animals which are the good kinds, try not to harm it. If it is the bad ones, you must also try not to harm it. If you are scared, you can pretend that you did not see the insect or you call an adult to help put the insect into a plastic bag and put it at a safe place the insect can be. In the zoo, do not harm the animals or throw food at them or play tricks at them. They may get injured and extinct or it may come and harm you.

  6. The earth is considered as one of the most beautiful planets in the universe. It is the only planet in our galaxy that has enough water to support life. Unfortunately our planet is suffering due to many problems which should be solved before it is too late. The major problems that are facing our world today are population, pollution and animal extinction. One of the problems facing our world is population. It began about ten thousand years ago when the humans settled and began farming. The farming provides more food for the people thus making the population grow. Now we are about 6 billion in population and in a few years we will be around 10 to 11 billion. Therefore, our population will almost double in size. This means that we will need more food to support us. A study in 1986 by Peter Vitonesk, a Stanford biologist, showed that the humans are already consuming about 38.8 of what is possible for us to eat. Thus, if the population keeps increasing, the percentage will increase also, making us closer and closer to the biophysical limits. By studying the earth’s capacity, Dr. Cornell, another biologist, believes that we are already crowded for this would. He believes that our world can only support two million people. Not only this, but population can cause complicated problems to the countries with very high population. These countries will need more schools to educate its people, they will need more hospitals and public health to take care of their people, and they will need more water and more soil for farming to feed all the people. In order to solve the population growth problem, the people should be educated. Once the people are educated they will be aware of the problems they cause when they have more than two children. Therefore the next generation should be educated and aware of what is going around them. Pollution is another major factor that is threatening our world today. One example of pollution is nitrogen. Humans are adding about 130 to 150 million tons over the 90 to 150 tons that are produced by the nitrogen cycle. This excess in nitrogen causes coastal waters and estuaries to grow toxic algae, killing the fish and trapping the solar heat in the air. Another example of pollution is methane. Methane is produced by gases released by cows, termite mounds or by the bottom of rice paddy. If found in the air methane is very poisonous. By raising more cattle, cutting more tropical forests, thus increasing the amount of termites, and by growing more rice, the methane concentration in the air is almost twice as higher as it was 160,000 years ago. Smoke is another pollution factor. Smoke that is produced by cars contains carbon dioxide (CO2). This carbon dioxide in the air causes global warming, which results in the green house effect and climate changes. Satellite studies show that perhaps we will increase the temperature by 3.6 degrees by the year 2001. The warmer the weather the more water it can hold, the higher the precipitation will be. The higher the precipitation the more clouds, the more rain, and the more snow there will be. This will result in more storms and floods. Studies by Thomas Karl of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed that the total winter precipitation in the US has increased to about 10% since 1900. All these pollution factors result in raising the water level and melting of the icebergs. This means that the low land islands will be flooded with water. This is a very big problem because the water level will never go down and the icebergs will never grow back. Education of the people, their guidance, and effective law are major tools to compact pollution. The third major problem facing our world today is animal extinction. Animal species are dying off at a fast rate. There are two main reasons for animal extinction. The first reason for animal extinction is caused by humans. The humans have become every animals’ most dangerous rival. Humans’ carelessness, ignorance and greed caused many animals to disappear from our planet. Over hunting is one of the threats that leads to animal extinction. In the third world countries, some of the animals are hunted for their skins or tusks thus endangering the existence of those animals. Also because of the increasing population, the humans are destroying the animal habitats in order to increase the living area. Pollution produced by the humans and dumped into an animal’s environment also tends to endanger our species. Animal extinction are primarily caused by human activities, but there are also other natural factors which contribute to the reduction of animal life. Examples of these factors are natural disasters, climate changes, and unsuccessful competition for resources with other species. Of course, there is no solution that helps save the animals from the natural factors, but there is a solution to stop the humans from leading to the extinction of the animals. Very strict laws should be applied to control and stop excessive hunting and prohibit killing rare animals. If these three major problems continue to increase, then our mother earth will no longer be the wonderful planet that we once lived on. But we should not forget that science and scientists have great challenges to limit the magnitude of the three mentioned problems. Increasing the unit of production in agriculture, industry as well as in services will lessen the degree of those problems. The world achievements are great in the present century and for sure will be greater in the century we are approaching. More rational use of resources, more effective remedy of pollution and more scientific family planning will surely change the pessimism to optimism in out beautiful world. To conclude, all nations, rich or poor, have great responsibility to challenge the problems that confront our world. Indeed it is a healthy sign that nations meet and discuss policies and strategies, but the most important element in the whole process is the implementation of what has been agreed upon. In order for earth to support us, we have to support it first.

  9. I think the world is facing a very critical problem. I think one of them is about those who are poor. I have been to many countries and saw a hundreds of poor people. We should help the poor people by helping them when needed. When they needed food or money I will do my best. They poor people sometimes have to sleep on the road and work as slaves. I was very hurt to see them. I hope that the poor people would one day be healty

  12. Wow, so much things the earth are facing. Pollution is a common problem. I always have to hold my nose every time I smell smoke from ciggaretes (Possible spelling mistake :P). Then there's water pollution. Oil from ships flow into the seas and kill fish. Some people even throw their rubbish into the water! Of course, land pollution is more common. People don't even bother to pick up the rubbish they throw or see! All this pollutiion is horrible. Don't people always say 'Save the best for last'? Well then, it's better to throw rubbish into the bins and keep the enviroment clean than to be lazy and throw the rubbish onto the ground. You won't find good things that way

  14. The addition of that single word "very" did more than reflect mounting scientific evidence that the release of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases from smokestacks, tailpipes and burning forests has played a central role in raising the average surface temperature of the earth by more than 1 degree Fahrenheit since 1900. It also added new momentum to a debate that now seems centered less over whether humans are warming the planet, but instead over what to do about it. In recent months, business groups have banded together to make unprecedented calls for federal regulation of greenhouse gases. The subject had a red-carpet moment when former Vice President Al Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth," was awarded an Oscar; and the Supreme Court made its first global warming-related decision, ruling 5 to 4 that the Environmental Protection Agency had not justified its position that it was not authorized to regulate carbon dioxide.

    Global Warming:
There Are increase in the average temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during the 100 years .

  18. The world is heading for an "ecological credit crunch" far worse than the current financial crisis because humans are over-using the natural resources of the planet, an international study warns today.

The Living Planet report calculates that humans are using 30% more resources than the Earth can replenish each year, which is leading to deforestation, degraded soils, polluted air and water, and dramatic declines in numbers of fish and other species. As a result, we are running up an ecological debt of $4tr (£2.5tr) to $4.5tr every year - double the estimated losses made by the world's financial institutions as a result of the credit crisis - say the report's authors, led by the conservation group WWF, formerly the World Wildlife Fund. The figure is based on a UN report which calculated the economic value of services provided by ecosystems destroyed annually, such as diminished rainfall for crops or reduced flood protection.

The problem is also getting worse as populations and consumption keep growing faster than technology finds new ways of expanding what can be produced from the natural world. This had led the report to predict that by 2030, if nothing changes, mankind would need two planets to sustain its lifestyle. "The recent downturn in the global economy is a stark reminder of the consequences of living beyond our means," says James Leape, WWF International's director general. "But the possibility of financial recession pales in comparison to the looming ecological credit crunch."

  20. Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into an environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem i.e. physical systems or living organisms . Pollution can take the form of chemical substances, or energy, such as noise, heat, or light energy. Pollutants, the elements of pollution, can be foreign substances or energies, or naturally occurring; when naturally occurring, they are considered contaminants when they exceed natural levels. Pollution is often classed as point source or nonpoint source pollution.

We should not waste electricity. Alot of people are living thier television and fans on when they are not even using it. We could save the world by switching off ours televisions, fans and etc off when we are not using it.

Did you know that Global Warming is caused by
cutting down trees which makes less shade for us and also melts the ice in artatica and lots of other ice age places

These are some things that affect the the earth:

1.Increasing global temperature will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation, likely including an expanse of the subtropical desert regions.[15] Other likely effects include Arctic shrinkage and resulting Arctic methane release, shrinkage of the Amazon rainforest, increases in the intensity of extreme weather events, changes in agricultural yields, modifications of trade routes, glacier retreat, species extinctions and changes in the ranges of disease vectors.

    2. Effects of Arctic shrinkage include melting permafrost, leading to Arctic methane release, a marked decrease in Arctic sea ice and the observed increase in melt on the Greenland Ice Sheet in recent years.

These are a few things global warming.
